South Africa Embassy Event

Last week, members of Global Camps Africa’s Board of Directors and Host Committee were welcomed by the South African Ambassador to the South African embassy in Washington, DC. All in attendance enjoyed a lively discussion about the importance of GCA’s work in South Africa and our partnership with the South African embassy.

A special thank you to our Host Committee for joining us at the Embassy and for all of your efforts in helping support our upcoming annual gala, Spreading the News.

The 2016 Sizanani Award Goes To… Our International Vochellis!

We are excited to announce that GCA’s 2016 Sizanani Award winners are our international vochellis! We will be honoring them at the Spreading the News event in DC on May 7th for all that they have done and continue to do to empower vulnerable children.

In 2015, GCA presented its first Sizanani Award recognizing extraordinary work in the fight to empower children in the global battle with HIV and AIDS. We give this award to those who have placed the needs of youth worldwide above themselves and have taken meaningful and significant efforts to empower vulnerable children in need.

GCA’s international vochellis have given 2,400 days of their time, talent, and expertise. They have spent time away from their families and jobs and have traveled thousands of miles (at their own expense) to support the South African counselors and children of Camp Sizanani.  They have opened their hearts to our campers and, in so doing, have opened our campers' eyes to a world of love, care, and opportunity. And we cannot think of anyone more deserving of the Sizanani Award.

As a token of our gratitude, we would like to offer to our international vochellis a ticket to the event to collectively accept this award. If you are an international vochelli and will be accepting this award in person, please contact our Development Manager, Jordan Kough. And we would also like to provide you with the tools they need to help us Spread the News. Start your own announcement page as a Sizanani Award winner and help GCA send more South African children to camp. You will be hearing from many members of the GCA team as we honor as many of our vochellis as we can this year!

Help us celebrate our wonderful international vochellis by purchasing your ticket to Spreading the News today!

Report from the Field - Youth Clubs Update

We’re hearing great things from the vochellis about the latest Youth Clubs, which have been going strong since February. Much like at camp, Youth Clubs are filled with singing, dancing and laughter. Those campers who have attended Youth Clubs before have been helping show the ropes to the new ones. Campers are working on activities to help build self esteem, practice problem solving and teamwork, and much more. They have enjoyed attending the Youth Clubs so much that they don’t want to leave at the end of the day! One camper, Nomcebo, had a chance to help out as a junior vochelli. She had such an amazing experience that she said she wants to become a vochelli one day.

We are looking forward to more Youth Clubs and sharing more updates!

AIDS WALK NEW YORK

Join us on May 15th to raise funds and awareness for the fight against HIV and AIDS at the 31st annual AIDS Walk New York.

Over the past thirty years, AIDS Walk New York has raised millions of dollars to support prevention, care, and advocacy programs for HIV/AIDS-affected men, women, and families. It is the largest single-day AIDS fundraising event in the world. The 31st Annual AIDS Walk New York will benefit not only organizations in the New York area, but also groups like Global Camps Africa that participate through the Community Partnership Program. More than 30,000 participants are expected to attend this year.

You can help by registering to walk with our team and invite your friends by sharing our social media posts about the event. Can’t make it? Support Team Global Camps Africa with a donation to go towards our fundraising goal of $5,000 to help GCA achieve our mission of empowering youth to have positive impacts on their communities, and ultimately achieve an AIDS-free tomorrow!

AIDS Walk New York is 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). The day will begin on May 15th at 8:30am with check in at 59th Street and 5th Avenue, followed by an opening ceremony at 9:15am and the AIDS Walk beginning at 10am. The AIDS Walk begins and ends in Central Park and usually takes about 2.5 hours to complete.
