Huntsville Forester - Mar. 08 - It’s important to foster love for the arts in kids
The theatre became a passion for me at a very young age. By the age of 10 I was deeply engrossed with dance classes, singing lessons, rehearsals and performance opportunities.

I have come to learn just how important it is to have access to such forms of self-expression. Recently my family and I volunteered at a residential camp for children in South Africa who had been orphaned through HIV/AIDS.

Voices for Humanity and Global Camps Africa
Voices for Humanity is traveling today to South Africa with Global Camps Africa, A non-profit organization founded by Phil Lilienthal. Founded as a joint venture between WorldCamps, a non-profit American camping organization, and HIVSA, a South African foundation that provides care and services to HIV-affected individuals, Camp Sizanani is a residential camp offered free of charge to children aged 9 through 16 whose lives have been affected by HIV. "Sizanani" is Zulu for "help each other". Six camps are held each year for a total of ten days, bringing together up to 130 children and 30-35 counselors. The children range from 10-15 years old and are largely from the Soweto area. Camp Sizanani is situated in the small village of Magaliesburg, a one-hour drive west of Johannesburg The camp offers a haven for disadvantaged children, most of whom come from Soweto, Johannesburg’s enormous township, to which black Africans were banished during South Africa’s apartheid.

Global Activism: Fighting HIV/AIDS with Camps for Kids - Phil Lilienthal on NPR
South Africa has one of the most severe HIV/AIDS epidemics in the world. The United Nations estimates that 5 and a half million people are living with HIV in South Africa. The pervasiveness of AIDS in South Africa can be especially hard on children. In 2005, there were over a million orphans due to AIDS in South Africa.

Phil Lilenthal saw the need to help children affected by AIDS and founded Global Camps Africa. The organization started a camp for kids outside of Johannesburg in South Africa that blends HIV/AIDS awareness with good old camp fun. Phil Lilenthal told Jerome how he came up with the idea for Global Camps Africa.

Phil Lilienthal Interview on the Social Edge - Interview With Patrick O'Heffernan
Phil Lilienthal

Phil sees himself as a social entrepreneur – he is providing a service in a non-static way. Part of the teaching at camp is how to prevent AIDS. He is giving the children a platform where they can find answers themselves and hopes the lessons they learn in camp become part of their inner beings, especially AIDS avoidance.
